A Visit to Thailand

Sometimes the journey becomes more memorable than the destination.

Thailand was my fourth international destination, and by then I had started to feel something I never expected a few years earlier — I was becoming a traveller.

There was something about Thailand that attracted me. The tropical weather, beaches, the energy of the streets, and the curiosity of experiencing a completely different culture.

And, of course, the moment you say Bangkok, people start making their own assumptions. 😂

I was a bachelor, travelling with a group of friends, including girls, and yes, I already knew people would have their own theories about why we were going to Bangkok and Pattaya.

But honestly, my reason was much simpler.

I wanted to travel, experience a new country, see the beaches, walk through unfamiliar streets and just enjoy being somewhere completely different.

And yes, for the record…

I am an innocent guy. 😉

The Trip Almost Didn’t Start

The journey started with a little panic.

We were late for the airport.

At the Delhi airport, the AirAsia check-in counter told us that check-in for our Delhi–Jaipur flight had already closed.

For a few seconds, I was genuinely shaken.

We weren’t just catching this flight. We had another flight from Jaipur to Bangkok later that evening.

If we missed this one, the entire Thailand plan could fall apart.

We requested the staff to help us somehow. Luckily, someone listened.

The passengers who were already waiting in the queue were asked to pause, and the staff quickly processed our baggage and boarding passes.

We were told to move towards the aircraft.

One of my co-travellers also knew someone who was working at the airport. She contacted her, and that person came to help us.

He simply told us:

“Don’t worry. Walk. Don’t run.”

We finally boarded.

He even came inside the aircraft to make sure all of us had taken our seats.

At that moment, my friend thanked her contact.

But honestly, I remember silently thanking him too.

Sometimes a journey starts with a little panic just to remind you how badly you wanted it to happen.

Jaipur — An Unexpected Stopover

We reached Jaipur, but there was another problem.

We had our luggage with us, and our Bangkok flight wasn’t until later that evening.

Carrying all those bags around the city wasn’t exactly part of the plan.

Once again, one of my co-travellers contacted a friend who worked at the Jaipur airport.

Before we could even ask for help, she offered to keep our luggage at her flat.

That solved a problem we hadn’t even figured out how to solve.

We left our bags there, had lunch, and went out to explore Jaipur for a while.

I’d already visited Jaipur before, but that didn’t matter.

We had hours to spend, and we were in the mood to enjoy them.

We visited a couple of places, walked around, and eventually went shopping.

I bought some shorts and T-shirts for the Thailand trip.

Later, after sunset, we were simply walking around the streets of Jaipur, enjoying the evening.

There was something funny about it.

A few hours earlier, we were panicking about missing our flight.

Now we were casually exploring Jaipur, knowing that Thailand was waiting for us.

Around 8 PM, we collected our luggage and headed back to the airport.

And then…

another problem.

During check-in, we discovered that two of us had exceeded our baggage allowance.

So what did we do?

We started transferring clothes and belongings from one bag to another right there at the airport. 😂

We were moving things around as if we were running a small luggage business.

Even after all that, we were still slightly over the limit.

And then we remembered the girl who had helped us earlier.

She was actually on duty at the airport.

My co-traveller called her again and explained the situation.

She took some time, spoke to a senior, and somehow helped us get everything sorted.

And there was one more surprise.

Because of the rearrangement, all four of us ended up getting seats together.

We thanked everyone who helped us and even took a few pictures with them.

After all that drama…

we finally boarded our flight to Bangkok.

At that point, reaching Thailand itself felt like an achievement. 😂

Finally, Thailand 🇹🇭

The first thing I remember seeing after arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport was something that immediately caught my attention.

The famous scene of Devas and Asuras churning the ocean.

As someone coming from India, seeing that connection to Hindu mythology in another country felt fascinating.

It was one of those small moments where you realise how cultures can travel far beyond geographical borders.

The weather was hot, and we still had to travel onwards to Pattaya.

After reaching the hotel and checking in, we finally had some time to rest.

We had been travelling for hours.

So we did what every tired traveller eventually does.

We slept.

Walking Into Walking Street 😂

Later that evening, we went out to explore Pattaya.

We were walking through the streets, enjoying the evening atmosphere, when we reached a place called Walking Street.

And honestly…

I had absolutely no idea what I was walking into.

We entered, and within a few minutes I was thinking:

“Thank God I’m not here with my family.” 😂

As a first-time traveller, I was simply not prepared for what I was seeing.

It was a completely different atmosphere from anything I had experienced before.

And that was one of the interesting things about travelling.

You don’t always travel to find things you already understand.

Sometimes you travel to encounter things that make you stop and think,

“Okay… this is definitely different.”

I explored the place with my friends, laughed about our reactions, and eventually moved on.

Thailand Through My Eyes

One of the most memorable things for me was simply walking through the streets and seeing how differently people enjoyed themselves.

Music everywhere.

People dancing.

Strangers interacting with strangers.

People from completely different countries sharing the same street.

I’m actually a little shy when it comes to dancing in front of strangers.

So while people were encouraging me to join them, I slowly disappeared from the scene. 😂

But I enjoyed watching.

Travel doesn’t always mean participating in everything.

Sometimes just observing people is enough to learn something.

The Food I Couldn’t Imagine Eating 😂

Thailand also gave me one of the strangest food experiences of my life.

I saw things being cooked that I had never imagined seeing on a food stall.

Crabs.

Insects.

Creepy crawlies.

And even crocodile meat.

I am a vegetarian, so there was absolutely no question of me trying any of it.

But I was fascinated by the fact that people were actually eating these things so casually.

I remember looking at it and thinking:

“How are people putting crocodiles in their stomach?”

Then came my next thought:

“Is it something like… yummy yummy in my tummy?” 😂

No.

Definitely not for me.

I kept exploring, though.

Because curiosity doesn’t always mean you have to participate.

Sometimes you can simply look, laugh, wonder, and move on.

A Little Magic and a Lot of Laughter

We also came across the famous style of ice cream where the preparation itself becomes a little performance.

The magician-style ice cream was completely new for us at that time.

People were standing around watching the performance, waiting for the final ice cream.

The preparation was entertaining.

The crowd loved it.

And when I finally tasted the ice cream…

Let’s just say the performance was better than the ice cream. 😂

After exploring the streets, we eventually found an Indian Punjabi restaurant.

For a vegetarian traveller in a completely different country, finding familiar Indian food can feel like finding home for a few minutes.

We had dinner and returned to the hotel.

The Night I Chose Sleep

That night, my friends planned a little cocktail session.

I had other plans.

Since the beginning of the trip, I wasn’t feeling completely well. I had a little cold and cough and was already tired from travelling.

So while everyone else was enjoying their vodka party in another room, I chose something much more exciting.

Sleep.

They had picked up their drinks from 7-Eleven, which reminded me of the convenience stores we have back home.

And while they were enjoying their night…

I was sleeping.

Sometimes the most mature travel decision is knowing when you don’t need another adventure.

Seeing Thailand Beyond the Tourist Side

The next day, we continued exploring.

What I remember most isn’t one particular attraction.

It was the overall feeling.

The streets were busy.

Motorcycles moved through traffic.

People were constantly coming and going.

There were restaurants, cafes, shops, music, nightlife and people from different parts of the world.

Everything felt energetic.

And sometimes slightly chaotic.

One thing that particularly caught my attention was the way motorcycles moved through traffic, often finding their way through very narrow spaces between cars.

Every time I saw it, I thought:

“This is either extremely skilled or extremely risky.” 😂

I also noticed that communication wasn’t always easy.

The language difference, cultural differences and completely different environment sometimes made even simple things feel like a small adventure.

And that’s exactly what I had travelled for.

What Thailand Taught Me

One thing I learned from this trip was that travelling somewhere doesn’t mean everything will match your expectations.

Some things will impress you.

Some will confuse you.

Some will make you laugh.

Some will make you uncomfortable.

And some will simply become stories that you remember years later.

Thailand gave me all of those.

It also reminded me of something I strongly believe about travelling:

Do whatever you have on your travel wishlist — responsibly, of course — because you don’t want to come back home wondering what you could have experienced.

You may not love everything you see.

You may not understand everything you encounter.

But if you keep an open mind, every place leaves something with you.

Looking Back

Today, when I think about Thailand, I don’t primarily remember the hotel, the streets, the shopping or even the places we visited.

I remember the chaos before the trip.

The airport staff who helped us.

The unexpected stay of our luggage in Jaipur.

The ridiculous luggage reshuffling at check-in.

The people who helped us when we needed them.

Walking into a place without knowing what to expect.

Looking at food I would never eat.

Laughing with friends.

Being the shy guy who didn’t dance with strangers.

And finally returning home with another collection of stories.

That’s what travel has slowly become for me.

Not just visiting countries.

Not just taking photographs.

But collecting experiences that stay with you long after the passport stamp becomes old.

Thailand was another chapter in that journey.

And looking back, I’m glad we made that trip.

Because sometimes the best stories begin with…

“We’re getting late for the airport.” 😂
