A gap is created when the next completed 1-minute candle's range does not overlap the previous candle's range (gap up: low above the previous high; gap down: high below the previous low). A gap is filled when a later completed candle trades back to the previous candle's range boundary — a wick is enough; partial entry into the gap is not a fill.
