How these numbers are calculated

Advance / Decline

Each stock's last traded price is compared with its previous close. Up = advance, down = decline, a change of less than half a paisa = unchanged. Percentages are of stocks with a valid price. A/D ratio = advances ÷ declines (not shown when there are no declines).

Moving-average breadth

The share of stocks whose current price is above their 20-day exponential moving average (EMA), 50-day simple moving average (SMA) and 200-day SMA, using daily closing prices. During the session the averages include today's current price as the latest value. Stocks with fewer daily closes than the average needs are left out of that measure.

52-week highs and lows

A new 52-week high means today's high is above the highest high of the previous 52 weeks (365 calendar days); a new low means today's low is below the lowest low. Only stocks with close to a full year of daily history are counted. H/L ratio = new highs ÷ new lows.

Volume breadth

Uses the most recent completed trading session, so it is not affected by partial intraday volume. Rising = volume higher than the session before; above average = volume higher than the average of the previous 20 sessions. The session date is shown on the card.

Data quality rules

Missing, zero or invalid prices are excluded, never counted as zero. Stocks whose quote is from an older session (for example, suspended stocks) are excluded. If fewer than 90% of an index's stocks have a valid price, its breadth is not shown. Every card says how many stocks it is based on.

Frequently asked questions

What is market breadth?

Market breadth measures how many stocks are taking part in a market move. An index can rise because of a few large companies while most stocks fall; breadth counts every stock in the group so you can see how broad or narrow a move is.

How is the advance-decline ratio calculated?

Advances are stocks trading above their previous close, declines are stocks trading below it, and the A/D ratio is advances divided by declines. A ratio above 1 means more stocks are up than down; below 1 means more are down. When no stock is down the ratio is not defined and is shown as "no declines".

What does "% above the 200-day moving average" mean?

It is the share of stocks whose current price is above the simple average of their last 200 daily closing prices. The 50-day SMA and 20-day EMA work the same way over shorter periods. Stocks without enough price history are left out of that measure rather than counted as zero.

How often is this data updated?

During NSE market hours (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday) the numbers are refreshed about every 5 minutes. After the close a final snapshot is kept until the next session. The "Last updated" time always shows when data was actually received.

Where does the data come from?

Prices and daily history come from the official Upstox API. Index constituents come from the lists published by NSE Indices, and the F&O stock list from NSE. Data may be delayed or subject to API and data availability.
