Unix Timestamp Converter
Turn a Unix timestamp into a readable date in UTC and your own time zone, or convert a date and time into a timestamp. Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds are detected automatically.
Convert Unix time
Epoch ⇄ date · UTC and local time.
Your time zone:
Timestamp → date & time
Date & time → timestamp
How to use it
- Paste a timestamp into "Timestamp → date & time". The unit is detected from its length, or choose it yourself.
- Read the result in UTC, your local time zone, ISO 8601 and RFC 2822 formats, plus how long ago or ahead it is.
- To go the other way, pick a date and time, say whether it is local time or UTC, and copy the seconds or milliseconds.
- The current Unix time at the top updates every second; pause it to copy a fixed value.
Good to know
- Seconds or milliseconds?
- Unix time counts seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00 UTC. Many systems (JavaScript, Java, most databases) use milliseconds instead. Today a timestamp in seconds has 10 digits and one in milliseconds has 13 — that is how the unit is detected.
- Time zones
- A timestamp is the same moment everywhere; only how it is displayed changes. Your local time comes from your device's time zone setting, shown at the top of the tool.
- Microseconds and nanoseconds
- Logs from Python, Go, databases and tracing tools often use these. They are converted exactly; dates can show up to millisecond precision.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds that have passed since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC (the "Unix epoch"), not counting leap seconds. It is a simple, time-zone-free way to store a moment in time.
How do I convert a timestamp to IST?
If your device is set to India Standard Time, the Local row already shows IST (UTC+05:30). Otherwise add 5 hours 30 minutes to the UTC time.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit number overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (timestamp 2147483647). Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.
Can timestamps be negative?
Yes. Negative values are moments before 1970. This converter supports them.
